NSTA Annual Conference

Event: March 18-21, 2010
Session: March 19, 8:00am-9:00am; Room Franklin 5
Location: Philadelphia Marriott; Philadelphia, PA

Title: Identifying Critical Causes Related to Kids in Poverty

Description: The learning needs of children living below the poverty line are often hidden below the radar. Certainly achievement gaps between students from different ethnic and/or language backgrounds are frequently the subject of national reports. A process designed to help teachers identify the root causes of lower achievement and gaps between groups of children can make solutions visible. Our work has demonstrated results in improved student learning for student subgroups with significant achievement gaps like those living below the poverty line (and students with special learning needs!). This NSTA session in Philadelphia will highlight the causal analysis process that successful Using Data schools are using to identify and eliminate achievement gaps while providing a sustainable foundation for any learning community to practically, systematically and successfully address the larger spectrum of school improvement.

Presenter(s):Diana Nunnaley, Director of Using Data at TERC; Terry Lashley, Learning Curve, Knoxville, TN

KIPP School Summit 2009

Event: Aug 2-9, 2010
Sessions: 3  90-minute sessions on Aug. 4 and 5, see below for details
Location: Las Vegas, NV

Session 1: August 4, 10:45am-12:15pm
Title: Which Data? When? And, How Do We Create a Culture of Precision Teaching and Continuous Improvement?

Description: Backward Design (and forward) - Learn how to use classroom assessments to identify student learning challenges and to build your instruction to increase student learning. Your analysis will reveal how well your students are doing in critical thinking and how well aligned your curriculum is to provide instruction in this vital domain.
This session will use common assessment items, student work items, and classroom exercises to demonstrate a process for understanding student thinking and responding to identified gaps.

Presenter: Diana Nunnaley, Project Director of Using Data at TERC

Session 2: August 4, 2:00pm-5:00pm:
Title: Learning From Analyzing Student Work

Description:"We're drowning in data" is often the first comment made by teacher teams when talking about how they are using data. Classroom teachers, jointly analyzing their student data hold the keys to improved student performance, and even more important, the elimination of achievement gaps between groups of students.
All data are not created equal.  But every type of school data can bring its own meaning when teachers are supported in a structured process of collaborative inquiry including causal analysis and developing responses monitored through the use of continuous formative assessment of understanding.

This hands-on session will walk you through the process and provide an opportunity to experience several techniques and tools that have been successfully used to sustain a culture of continuous improvement based on the continuous use of data to inform instruction.

Presenter: Diana Nunnaley, Project Director of Using Data at TERC

Session 3 : August 5, 10:45am-12:15pm
Title: Verify Causes Before Implementing Solutions

Description: Be a participant (in the fishbowl) or an observer (looking into the fishbowl) to see what real collaboration looks like in practice. Are we collaborative in our work or just collegial? Are our conversations honest or safe? Do our questions contain judgment or are they inquisitive? What are the personal capabilities and norms of group behaviors that can help our schools transcend entrenched norms and personal beliefs from generations of educational practice? And, how can the analysis of data get us to the kind of collaboration that results in high performing schools?
Schools are encouraged to attend this session as a school team.

Presenter: Diana Nunnaley, Project Director of Using Data at TERC
