Teaching Matters, Inc. (TMI) is a nonprofit organization that partners with educators to ensure that all students can succeed in the digital age. We target common challenges to student success with educational innovations made possible by technology. We offer comprehensive services enabling educators to apply innovation to enhance school performance, instruction and student learning. Teaching Matters achieves improvements in core and 21st century teaching and learning through:
- Planning and assessment for 21st century skills
- Focusing on data to inform instruction
- Targeted professional development for teachers and administrators
- Comprehensive implementation of 21st century curricula
For 15 years, Teaching Matters has been a frontline and highly regarded provider of targeted and meaningful professional development to thousands of teachers from more than half of the New York City's 1500 schools. At the center of our work has been a set of clearly defined benchmarks that make explicit the instructional methods and aspects of pedagogy we encourage teachers to adopt. (Teacher accountability is determined on the basis of these benchmarks.) We have also developed a proven process for co-constructing learning experiences with school leaders and their staffs.
Teaching Matters uses ongoing documentation to monitor and inform the progress of our professional services. As a result, schools have experienced positive changes in: teachers' core understandings, content knowledge, and instructional practices as well as students' motivation to learn and quality of work.
