Using Data Online: Translating Data into Information
Beginning in 2008
Online Registration is now open!
If you are like most schools and districts, you probably have some of the following dilemmas with regard to using your student learning data:
- Available by the truckload and overwhelming
- Difficult getting staff to engage with it
- Staff are not using the data to guide instruction
- Every year your state test brings new surprises
- Difficult to use it to to improve instruction
For individuals and small groups facing these challenges, we offer the Using Data Online course. Participants learn how to dig deeper into student learning and other data without being overwhelmed, and then to use it to identify student learning problems and their causes. Collaborative inquiry and data-driven dialogue are explored and enacted during the course. This course also prepares school leaders to implement the Using Data model in their own schools to guide their data analysis, instruction, and classroom practice.
UD Online runs for 15 weeks, and is comprised of 15 one-week sessions. While this course is a wholly online experience, the collaboration that is at the core of the Using Data philosophy is also woven into the activities and lessons of UD Online. Participants are expected to post to the course blogs, and engage collaboratively with other students in data teams in Data Driven Dialogues. Because of this, many sections of the course and the activities within them are time sensitive.
Graduate credit is available, and documentation that you have successfully completed the course is provided so that participants may apply to their local Departments of Education for PDPs.
Fees and Refunds
Tuition for the course is $750. This fee includes Using Data/Getting Results: A Practical Guide to Improvement in Mathematics and Science by Nancy Love. Supplemental materials and readings are available for download on the course site. Participants are encouraged to use all materials provided in the Data Facilitators Toolkit (the CD-Rom accompaniment to Using Data/Getting Results) in their schools with their own data teams.
A discount of $50 per participant is available for data teams of 4 more. We recommend data teams of no larger than 8 for the online course. For larger groups, we recommend our face-to-face workshops.
3 Graduate Credits are available through Salem State College for an additional $200.
Refunds are based on the following schedule:
Withdraw before the first class: Full tuition refund, less $90
Withdraw before the third class: Full tuition refund, less $150
Withdraw after the third class: No refunds
Because so much of the course is team-based, we strongly discourage dropping from the course after the third session. Special arrangements may be made through the course instructor if circumstances prohibit you from finishing the course as structured.
