The purpose of the Using Data process is to build the capacity of educational leaders to lead a process of collaborative inquiry with school-based data teams and to influence the culture of schools to be one in which data are used continuously, collaboratively and effectively to improve teaching and learning. Our professional development program consists of six days of professional development workshops sequenced over one calendar year to prepare school leader (data coaches) and data teams to actively and consistantly apply the Using Data Procees to identify and eliminate student achievement gaps.
Developed with a grant from the National Science Foundation and evaluated by independent researchers, the Using Data program has been field-tested in high-poverty, diverse urban and rural school districts across the country. With over two-and-half years of implementation, the program has documented gains in student achievement in mathematics, science and other content areas and has been successful in narrowing achievement gaps between economic and racial groups, as well as increasing collaboration, data use, and instructional improvement.
Through this Using Data Process, data facilitators will gain essential skills and knowledge in four areas:
1) Data Literacy: understand, accurately interpret, and respond appropriately to multiple data sources, including formative and summative student learning assessments, student work, and quantitative and quantitative and qualitative data related to programs, practices, and policies.
2) Facilitation: facilitate data-driven dialogue and lead data teams through short cycles of planning, implementing, and monitoring instructional improvement.
3) Leadership for Sustainability: communicate vision, build broad support, and establish systems to sustain a culture of continuous improvement.
4) Cultural Proficiency: respond to data by expanding opportunities to learn to diverse students; monitor the data process to assure that responses "do no harm" to any student groups.
